Grand Canyon UniversityIntroduction:The goal of this paper is to state a traditional job description and redesign in order to motivate the employee through job enrichment. A traditional job description will be developed and by using job characteristics described by Richard Hackman and Greg Oldhan they will be modified. These core job characteristics are skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy and feedback.

After the new job description is developed I will describe the feasibility of such changes, the likely impact on the worker's productivity and commitment and develop strategies to overcome any employee resistance.

Current job description (condensed):Position: Grounds Person (at school campus)Department: FacilitiesPosition description:This position will report directly to the Grounds Manager. Must be able to perform basic grounds maintenance and general grounds improvements including lawn and turf care, maintain various hardscape surfaces, planting and transplanting of material and pruning of shrubs and trees.

Primary duties:-Care of athletic fields including but not limited to over seeding, fertilizing, top dressing and aerating-Preparing fields for various athletic events-Operate various grounds equipment including but not limited to mowers, edgers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws and other grounds related equipment-Use of various grounds related hand tools-Maintain and troubleshoot sprinkler systems and controls-Apply herbicides and pesticides as neededQualifications:-Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely-Must have working knowledge of proper methods and procedures used in caring for plants, trees, flowers and turf areasMust be able to work independently(The Webb Schools, 2005)In order to enrich the above job description I feel that several key factors must be met.

They are:1. Expand the technical aspect of the position instead of a generic grounds person a more technically focused position would give a greater sense of pride and ownership.

2.More training in these specific areas.

3.Redefining and or clarification of certain duties and responsibilities.
