AP U.S. SUMMER ASSIGNMENT Please read the summer assignment instructions below and complete all. Purchase of book, reading, three chapter essays and book/film project are all due the Monday following the first week of school, Monday September 8th. Complete beforehand and use those first few days of school to clear up any questions, etc. (read: not to be done the weekend before; it will show). 1. Purchase the 2015 edition (not other editions) for approx. $30 of United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination by John J. Newman. Read chapters 1-4 of the book in totality. 3. Write the following essays, each one three pages max: Chapter I essay: "Compare and contrast the English relationship and the French relationship with the Native Americans" Chapter II essay: "To what extent did mercantilism affect the political and economic development of America's 13 colonies?" Chapter III essay: "Comment on the extent to which each of the following contributed to a more democratic society in the 13 colonies: a) the Great Awakening b) immigration c) the Zenger case" 4. Choose one of the following book and movie pairings that depict American History up to 1900 (note: some are rated R films and contain mature content; if you/your family is uncomfortable with this, there are plenty of lower rated films to choose from). Both read the book and watch the film in entirety (best bet is checking both out at the library, or Ondemand for the films, etc.).
