The Friends University-Community Symphony Orchestra had their 47th Concert Season Series on the February 7, 2006 at the Alexander Auditorium at 7.30PM. Mr. Daniel Racer and Dr. John Taylor were the co-conductors of this event. Valerie Sullivan was the Concert master.

Les nuages: "I' Hommage a Debussy et Stravinsky dan un orage de grele" began the concert. This piece was conducted by Mr. Daniel Racer. He is currently instructor of Theory/Composition and Instrumental Music at Friends University. Now if I talk about this first piece, it had plenty of pizzicato strings at the beginning and at the end very little Timpani. The song had one cadence in the middle.

The next piece was the Piano Concerto No.1, Opus 11. Mvt. 1- Allegro maestoso, - Friedrich Chopin. Andrew Sun (winner of the Wichita Area Piano Teachers League competition) gave an astonishing performance by the piano.

The concerto opens with a grand, sweeping orchestral introduction, which features all the principal thematic material of the movement.

The commanding vigor of the opening theme in the strings is neatly countered with a more lilting, lyrical melody, also in the strings. When the piano enters it restates both of these melodies, then elaborate them with dazzling displays of technical virtuosity.

Once I got this interesting information from an old music appreciation book, "When the E minor Concerto was in rehearsal, Chopin wrote to his friend Tytus Woyciechowski, "I feel like a novice, just as I felt before I knew anything of the keyboard. It is far too original and I shall end by being unable to learn it myself." Despite his misgivings, Chopin performed the solo piano part at the premiered on October 11, 1830 at the Warsaw National Theater. A Polish newspaper described it as "a work of genius"".
