Why we should have dropped the atomic bomb on Japan

Causes of Cold War

1.Following WWII, the U.S.S.R cut off the territories it conquered in Eastern Europe, while on its way to beating Germany from the West via an "iron curtain"

2.The U.S and Western Europe feared the spread of communism in Europe. The U.S created the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan to deal with helping Western Europe rebuild

3.Military alliances (N.A.T.O) and the (Warsaw Pact) were created further tensions in Europe.

4.In 1961, the Soviet Union built the Berlin Wall which made sure that Germany was divided into 2 halves

5. The U.S and the U.S.S.R were involved in a nuclear arms race.

The competed with one another to build more and better weapons of mass destruction. This led to increased fear of a nuclear war amongst all nations of the world.

oUnited Nations: an international peacekeeping organization founded in 1945 to provide security to the nations of the world

oIron curtain: represented Europe's division between a mostly democratic Western Europe and a Communist Eastern Europe

oContainment: a policy directed at blocking the expansion of communism

oTruman Doctrine: Truman's support for countries that rejected communism

oMarshall plan: proposed that America give aid to any European country that needed it

oCold War: hostility between the U.S and the Soviet Union in the decade following WWII

oNATO: ten Western European nations joined with the U.S and Canada to form a defensive military alliance
