Riordan Manufacturing Service Request

Introduction

Riordan Manufacturing Company, a maker of plastic products for several industries, is in need of modernizing its inventory management system. As such, Riordan executives have submitted a service request form to begin the process of creating a program that will serve the entire corporation. In order to integrate an inventory management program, the Information Technology department is going to have to research various commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) programs as well as investigate creating a program in-house to serve the company's specific needs.

Background

COO, Hugh McCauley, suggested having specific systems changes that will improve the company inventory or manufacturing processes.

The company was founded by Dr. Riordan, a chemistry professor who started Riordan Plastics, Inc, in 1991. Riordan is a global plastic manufacturer and is a Fortune 1000 enterprise with revenues in excess of $1 billion. It is currently employing 550 people with projected annual earning of $46 million.

Riordan is currently located in three areas: Michigan, Georgia, and San Jose (main headquarter), and currently expanded in China. (Riordan Manufacturing Website, 2007)

The most notable problems are that each location has its own finance and accounting systems which means each location uses different software's. This is going to cause a big problem because each system cannot communicate with each other. In addition, the inventory management can be improved at all locations. Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), barcode, and executive decisions support systems (EDSS) are only in San Jose and all location need these resources. Daily data is provided to the main office either by hardcopy report which must be retyped in the main systems and must be converted into the proper account codes.
