1. Introduction

1.1 Purpose

Overall, purpose of this report is to build understanding of how to measure bank's performance, by doing analysis on its profitability ratios, and by comparing it with manufacturing company.

1.2 Background

ANZ is one of the world's largest banks. Its primary markets are Australia and New Zealand, Asia Pacific, UK/ Europe and the United States. Its goal is to become Australasia's leading, most respected and fastest growing major bank (ANZ, 2005).

Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) is a major Australian Multinational Company. It is the largest manufacturer and distributor of soft drinks and other alcohol-free beverages, and is the market leader in the industry, with operations in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and South Korea (Coca-Cola Amatil, 2005).

Commonwealth Bank is one of Australia's leading providers of integrated financial services including retail, business and institutional banking, funds management, superannuation, insurance, investment and broking services.

It is also one of the largest listed companies on the Australian Stock Exchange and is included in the Morgan Stanley Capital Global Index (Commonwealth Bank, 2005).

Constellation Brands is an international company which is producer and marketer of beverage alcohol brands including wine, imported beer and spirits categories. The company is the largest multi-category supplier of beverage alcohol in the United States; a leading producer and exporter of wine from Australia and New Zealand; and both a major producer and independent drinks wholesaler in the United Kingdom (Constellation Brands, 2005).

1.3 Scope

Although there are many ways to measure performance of a firm, this report will mainly focus on the return-on-equity model to measure the profitability, which involves return-on equity, leverage multiplier, asset utilization, net margin, and interest margin ratios.

Furthermore, to keep updated, the information used is only from year 2003 and 2004.
