HR Roles and Responsibilities

Human Resource Management (HRM) is an important key to a success of a company by connecting in with the organization's objectives and business strategy. HRM maintains a healthy work environment between company policies and individuals. HRM is "the policies, practices, and systems that influence employees' behavior, attitudes, and performance"(Noe-Hollenbeck-Gerbert-Wright, 2003, p. 2). Human resource management can also be described as the relationship between the employer and the employee. There are basic functions all managers perform which are planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling. These represent what is often called the management process. Staffing, personnel management, or human resource management is the function for the organization to focus on today's workforce environment. It includes activities like recruiting, selecting, training, compensating, appraising, and developing.

The role of Human Resources is continuing to change. Today, HR executives are taking a more active role in meeting the competitive demands of today's corporations.

This change has affected many HR executives, including the HR specialists who work for Integris Metals. Human resource management's role in the organization has had to change with the current demands of diversity in the workplace, e-business, and ethics.

Integris Metals is a leader in the metal distribution industry. Integris operates out of thirty-four facilities worldwide. Its headquarters is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Integris Metals has a senior vice president of administration who overseas all of the human resources throughout the company Worldwide. There is a vice president of human resources who is responsible for Integris Metals in the United States. There is also a director of unions, and a director of compensations/ benefits. And there are several corporate human resource mangers that are assigned to support the different branches (Integris Metals intranet Site, 2004).

There are many responsibilities involved with human resource management.
