People take films for granted; they go to the cinema and pay a few pounds to see the movie of their choice. Then they go again the next week. They don?t realize how much work is actually put into making films, the lighting, editing, sound, colour, mise en scenes and different camera framings and movements.

Lighting is an essential part of films because you can use different lighting to create different effects. There are 5 main lighting techniques as well as filler lights which fill between back and key lighting. One lighting technique is under lighting, which is light shone beneath the actor or actress. This is used for horror films to make the people in the film look horrified or horrifying. It has a lot more effect at being scary than, for instance, top lighting, which is another form of lighting. Top lighting is used to make the star of the film look beautiful; it comes from above and would normally be used in romance films.

There is also backlighting, which is used to create a silhouette. This is also used in horror films, to create mystery. Fourthly, there is high key lighting, which has lots of filler lights to create a natural look. Lastly, there is low-key lighting, which is used to create a dramatic effect in films such as mystery or horror. The strong contrast of light and dark is known as chiaroscuro.

Editing is used in all films. This is the process by which footage is sequenced and spliced together. The speed and style of editing have a great effect on the finished product.
