Better Know Your Senators/ Representatives
There are two senators: Chuck Grassley, the senior senator and Tom Harkin the junior senator. There are four district representatives, Bruce Braley belongs to the first district, in the second district we have David Loebsack, third district, Tom Latham, and fourth district, Steve King. That leaves us with a total of six Federal Congressional Representatives. These are the current representatives but only till the end of the year. The November 4th, 2014 election winners will start January 1st, 2015.
Senator Thomas "Tom" Harkin was born in Cumming, Iowa, November 19th, 1939. His dad was a coal miner and his mom was a Slovenian immigrant, he still today lives in the house that he grew up in. Harkin graduated from Dowling High School in Des, Moines, he later went to Iowa State University off of a Navy ROTC scholarship, which he got a degree in government and economics.
He served in the Naval Reserves, he is in an American Legion in his hometown and is the Commander of the Congressional Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol. In 1969 Tom went to Washington to join Neal Smith the Iowa Congressman, this was shortly after he was married. Both he and his wife graduated from Catholic University of American Law School in Washington D.C. When finished, he moved back to Ames. Harkin was elected to Congress in 1984. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives for ten years then became Senator. Tom made history be being the first Democrat to win fifth term in the United Sates Senate. From January 1985 to September 2014, Tom missed 396 of 10,007 roll call votes which is 4%.
