Sickle Cell Anemia vs. Leukemia: Battle of the Blood

"A chronic disease is defined as an illness that is prolonged, does not resolve spontaneously, and is rarely cured. Chronic diseases are responsible for significant rates of disability, lost productivity, pain, suffering, and mention health care costs" (Donatelle, 2011, p.353). Some diseases develop over time while others develop before birth. Leukemia and Sickle Cell Anemia are an example of each of those. "Leukemia is a cancer of the blood-forming parts of the body, particularly the bone marrow and spleen" (Donatelle, 2011, p.370). Sickle Cell Anemia is an inherited blood disease that causes the red blood cells to be shaped like a crescent moon or the letter C.

These blood cells sickle and then cause blockage in the vessels resulting in a pain crisis ("Johns Hopkins Medicine", n.d.) These two diseases not only have numerous similarities, they differ in many ways also. Compared to Sickle Cell Anemia, Leukemia affects the white blood cells, is not hereditary, and is curable.

Sickle Cell Anemia and Leukemia are both blood diseases, and that is a similarity and difference all in one. They are similar in that they both affect the blood. The way in which each disease affects the blood is the difference. Sickle Cell Anemia affects the red blood cells while Leukemia affects the white blood cells.
