Experiment: a research method for investigating cause and effect under highly controlled conditions (pg 56 Pearson custom sociology). With environment and mixing one substance with another substance what might happen.

Participant observation: a research method in which investigators systematically observe people while joining them in their routine activities (pg 56 Pearson custom sociology). This method seems a bit difficult; it can take months to years to complete. You need to play two parts in that you need to "play the participant" and the "play the observer".

The basic ideas involved in this method are that you need to take a step back and look at people from and outside opinion while still participating in their lives. Threw this method you can get a lot more information on what you are researching, because it's more than just asking questions.

Survey: a research method in which subjects respond to a series of statements or questions on a questionnaire or in an interview (pg 56 Pearson custom sociology).
