Social Networking and the effects on adolescents

During the last years social networking has caused a great impact on the lives of adolescents. The use of social networks involves sharing information with others by creating a profile that displays personal information and the main purpose is to keep people in touch. These sites are a way to connect with family and friends by sharing photos, stories and by letting people know what they are currently doing. Along with these benefits come some risks. Adolescents do not see the dangers that these certain websites can cause to the individual. These social networks can benefit teenagers, but at the same time it might harm them and as a result precautions have to be taken in order to stay safe.

Today adolescents live in a world where they communicate by social network most of the time and this can benefit them in certain ways.

Some of the advantages social network provide are to "stay in touch with people who may have moved away. Normally, people try to stay in touch with friends via phone calls and the occasional letter or e-mail, but busy lives make it difficult to maintain contact" (Carey). Before, websites like Facebook and MySpace did not exist, and this made it difficult for teenagers to stay in touch with family members or friends. Now that these social networks exist teenagers do not struggle anymore to communicate with the people they had not seen. It is only a matter of seconds to talk to the person they wish to talk.
