"I think same-sex marriage should not even be an issue. It is a right that every American should have," say William Valdez. I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly because it is true. History has shown over and over that minority groups should be allowed basic rights no matter their beliefs. What is marriage and why should that right be denied same-sex couples? What are the legal issues with gay marriage? Why is the subject of gay marriage even being debated? Is gay marriage even worth fighting for? Without marriage, society regards gay couples as non-citizens.

Marriage is more than a bunch of legal rights and benefits. Marriage is a combination of culture, lifestyle, and most importantly love. Marriage by law cannot force society to support that union but makes society regard the couple's decision. Society expects certain aspects of marriage; intimacy, shared finances, shared home, cooperation of a sort, and a long term commitment to one another.

I believe that if the law does not support same-sex marriage it supports promiscuity.

The law decides who is married. A couple cannot just announce that they are married until they have a marriage license. Without the laws' support of a couple, you cannot expect society to support it. The legally binding part of marriage reflects the couple's right to financial benefits and rights if the couple separates; such as alimony. This familiar and unbiased sense of the law shows the world that a marriage between a man and a man or a woman and a woman is no different than a marriage between a woman and a man. Marriage binds two people together in such a way that it is tedious to get out of the relationship therefore it shows that it is more than a fling.
