Instructions: Collect data from three different speech events, analyze the events using the question below as guidelines & write a report that presents a good description of those communicative events.

Data collection 1. Observe three communicative events - formal, semi formal, and informal. It needs not to be wrong. It could range from a couple of minutes or more, just enough to answer the questions below.

2. This could be from natural conversations, TV or radio shows or interviews, or movies.

3. The best way to do is by recording those conversations. But if you do not have an access to a VCR or a tape recorder when collecting the data, you can just take note from the conversation.

4. The conversation must be in English.

5. Also include the following information in your report : a. What is the source of data: natural conversation, TV, radio or movies? b.

What is the setting? When and where does the conversation take place? c. Who are participants in each event? d. Describe any other contextual information that will be relevant to the analysis.

e. Transcribe about a page of conversation for each communicative event.

Questions 1. Setting: Identify the formality of each communicative event you collected according to 4 aspects of formality. Plot each event on the continuum of the formality. Show the examples that support your analyses.

2. Participants: What are the address terms each speaker uses? Describe any changes or variations of these terms, if there are any. What are the relationship terms of the participants? What social meaning is reflected from the use of those addresses terms, i.e. Power solidarity? Show the examples that support your analyses.

3. Topics: What are the topics of their conversation? For the two informal events, examine each topic closely and report...
