To some many of the characters of 1984 may have seemed ?unnecessary.? When you really put thought to it and actually look into the book, none of the characters seem to be of any lesser value. All are important assets to 1984, and they all are tied in very well.

The characters of lesser value really don?t exist. All add to the book quite clearly and make it flow. Parsons and his family are a prime example. Parsons wife would always ask for Winston?s help, showing that Parsons himself was never really around or there for the family. Parsons?s children also left something to be said. His kids symbolize that literally no one should be trusted. Parsons?s daughter tells on him to the thought police, in our world today a child would rarely imprison a family member. Without this in the book I don?t think the realization of how much Big Brother is being enforced is being made.

Katherine also shows obedience within Big Brother. Katherine is perceived in this novel as someone who lives only for the sake of Big Brother and the Party. Katherine is also the kind of person who really has no self worth. Who is to say that this is not the goal of the Party and Big Brother? Without Katherine in the novel we would have never have known how Winston thought of sex. The two of them being united and married is yet another way of showing how Big Brother is so controlling. Without Big Brother there these two people would have never found their selves married to one another, they are two completely different people with extremely different views on things. The only thing Katherine wanted to do is please the party, and do good for the party. Katherine?s main goal in life was to obey the party, whereas Winston rebelled.

Mr. Charrington, he seems to be a very charming individual who wants to help those stuck with Big Brother. Mr. Charrington, perceived as a prole to Winston and Julia was the last person they thought would betray them. It probably never even crossed their minds that he was part of the thought police, let alone O?Brian. Mr. Charrington is a small character in the novel, but really turns out to be one of the biggest parts of 1984, and defiantly the most shocking. Without Mr. Charrington Winston and Julia would have never gotten the little room above the shop, they would have never grown so fond of each other, and most importantly of all they would have never been caught. Again the character of Me. Charrington shows just how big and powerful the party really is. The Party is so powerful that they can watch someone for so long that they know exactly what they will do next, and they know just what to do to trick them into being caught. Which is exactly what happened in Winston?s place.

Syme on the other hand was a very tiny character, only mentioned once or twice. The significance of Symes disappearance is unbelievable. Syme was one of the smart ones, who really knew what was going on, the Party had no reason not to vaporize him. He could have been a threat to the Party and Big Brother. Syme could have informed people of what he knew, and really taken big brother down.

In the end all that is really left to be said is that all the characters in this novel were necessary, the small things that happened within these people really made what the book is. Throughout the characters George Orwell was able to show how important and powerful Big Brother really was, and how Big Brother could manipulate and change anything what so ever. If these Characters were not included in the book, how would have it turned out?
