Jesus was born to Mary and God between the years 5 and 4 B.C.,during Herod's reign as king. Joseph, the man who was engaged to Mary, had considered breaking off the engagement when he found out that Mary was pregnant. But an angel of God appeared to Joseph in a dream and explained to him that Mary was impregnated by God and was still a virgin so Joseph went through with the marriage. The angel also told Joseph to call the baby Jesus. Because of the census called by the Roman governor Pilate, Joseph and his wife Mary had to travel back to Joseph's home town of Bethlehem in Judea. When they arrived there, the inns were full and Mary's time had come. The only available lodging was an empty stall in a stable, a manger. And so, right there and then, Jesus was brought unto this world.

John the Baptist was the son of Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth, a relative of the Virgin Mary.

Both Zechariah and Elizabeth belonged to the order Abijah. One day in church the angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah and said, "Your wife will have a child and he is to be named John." He was born in 5 B.C. John the Baptist preached the Good News everywhere he traveled and baptized people (the Good News is that those who believe and love God and his son Jesus and who do not sin, will live eternally in Heaven). When Jesus finally meets with John, who has also been announcing Jesus' arrival, he tells John to baptize him in the Jordan river.
