Telecommunications

Telecommunications is a process that allows the transmission, emission or reception of data to be sent by means of wire, radio, electromagnetic or light wave. (2010) This is done over diminutive and significant distances for the sole purpose of communicating between two or more parties.

The electronically exchanging of information from one party to another can be described as data communication. Data communication is classified into two types or formats. There is analog, where the information is transmitted in the form of analog signals or in continuous wave lengths. A good example of this is the land line based telephone system. The other format is digital, the data is transferred in the form of digital sounds or in the numerical form of 0s and 1s. Transmission of data between computers is an example of digital communication. (2007) The primary components of the telecommunication system include the sending and receiving equipment and modems. It begins with the sending of information such as an e mail. The e mail is routed to a modem which converts the data from analog to digital or digital to analog. The conversion is done to be able to properly send the signal to the recipient depending on the type of transmission medium. This information is received by another modem that is connected to the recipient's telecommunication device. (Stair & Reynolds, p. 190)

The types of transmission mediums can vary. There are the solid mediums such as twisted wire, coaxial cable and fiber optic cable. The other main type of transmission medium is wireless. This is the broadcast of radio, microwave or infrared signals broadcast into the atmosphere. (Stair & Reynolds, p. 190)
