In recent years acts of terrorism has changed many aspects of the lives of United States citizens. The act of terrorism on September 9, 2001 changed many things for people in America. This terrorist act and others have had political, economic, and social impacts. It has also changed the way Americans perceive foreigners and our attitudes towards people from different cultures within our own borders.

One of the political effects this event has had on our country is the invocation of article V of the Washington treaty on October 2, 2001, less than a month after the attacks. This part of the treaty basically states that if one country in the alliance is attacked that the other countries are obligated to offer their assistance as they deem necessary (NATO, 2001). This has brought about cooperation and assistance to our country in helping to end terrorism in our country and abroad.

The economy was affected in many areas in the aftermath of September 11th. Many industries were hurt by the damage done that day. Two of the primary industries that suffered were the airlines and insurance companies. According to Gail Makinen, the government gave the airlines 15 billion dollars in assistance and loans (2002). This was mainly due to the sharp decrease in flights due to the public’s fear of flying. Even with this financial aid some airlines still went bankrupt. The insurance companies suffered similar losses. After so much damage to property and loss of life the companies had difficulty paying claims. This gave rise to the largest property/casualty claim in history at an estimated forty billion dollars (Makinen, 2002). Many companies and individuals had difficulty catching back up after such losses.

A social impact this event had on Americans was the intense discrimination of Muslims immediately following the attacks.
