It was a beautiful day in California and the weather was just right. You could feel the wind gently tickling your face. I felt like I was spending a day at the beach. The grass was alive, moving back and fourth. It had a dark green coat to it, tasting like it had been getting plenty of rain. I had a small piece of grass dangling from my mouth - as if I was John Wayne in an old western movie. I was mainly using the grass as a water source to help conserve the little water I had. I was witnessing a masterpiece one so precious, only Leonardo De Vinci could turn into a work of art. I could see dragonflies chasing one another as well as grass hoppers jumping around. I heard birds singing back and fourth to each other - almost as if they were trying to learn a new song.

It felt good to be alive and it felt good to be me, but the reality of war was another thing. I had to keep myself highly trained in field crafts and marksmanship. I was a Marine, who at any given time would have to take out selected targets from concealed positions, in support of combat operations.

I laid there on my stomach, in a cover and concealed position. My face was painted a variety of colors, which allowed me to blend me in with my background. My back was burning and I felt as if my blouse was on fire. I had been on my stomach for four hours now. My elbows were slowly starting to bleed and my hands were badly cut.
