In Amos 5:1-17 I will be looking for the overall meaning and different translations of the text. I will also be examining the passage for its consistency and clarity throughout the text. Amos 5:1-17 is a passage that can be learned from.

Amos 5:1-17 is about the Lord's demand on Israel to seek him. For Israel to not seek idols like Beersheba or Gilgal on God's demand. The passage talks about the people who trample the poor, steal, and bribe will never prosper in the Lord's eyes. Simply be good, flee evil and live. Hate evil and love the good (Revised English Bible). The 3 translations that I have looked at are the Jerusalem bible, the revised English bible, and the Living bible. All 3 translations show me the same point, seek good and not evil and you may live. Don't go to Bethel, Beersheba, or Gilgal for they are temptations.

The text shows me how the Lord wants us to be obedient. The Lord didn't want Israel's people to go to Beersheba. He gave them a choice to be obedient or not. If not there would be consequences (Living Bible).

Reading 3 passages before and after Amos 5:1-17 showed me more reasons why Israel was about to get punished. The lord had held back rain, sent deadly plagues, destroyed cities, and Israel still did not turn to him in troubling times (Jerusalem Bible). I think the key word in these translations is the word still. Israel still didn't look for the Lord even when life was in turmoil. They chose to worship other idols instead of the one who formed the mountains and made the winds.
