Langston Hughes has written many great stories including "Thank You Ma'm". The story takes place in Harlem, New York, the same place where Hughes was born and raised. The story may or may not have something to do with Langston's childhood, but if it did Hughes turned out A ok. A confused boy, Roger does not know where his life is going until he runs into Mrs. Jones.

Roger is a young boy that doesn't have a father figure to guide him though his adolescent life. Roger has nobody to tell him what to do and when to do it. So he didn't understand that he could get in serious trouble for stealing purses. Also, Roger does not understand about personal hygiene, for example he doesn't wash his face or brush his teeth. Mrs. Jones had to wash it for him! After Roger leaves Mrs. Jones doorstep, roger has a new sense of direction.

In the story it doesn't tell too much about Roger after he left but I know, that one-day with Mrs. Jones changed the rest of his life forever.

Smiling, laughing, and helping are just a couple of good traits that Mrs. Jones has. Mrs. Jones is always looking to give a helping hand. Even to people that try to rob her. How many people do you know that would do that? Probably not too many, that's why Mrs. Jones is such a phenomenal person. Never will you see a frown on Mrs. Jones face and if she sees you frown she will ask you too turn it upside down. Mrs. Jones really helped Roger find out who he really is and where his life will go if he continues to snatch purses. The fact of the matter is that with out Mrs. Jones Roger would probably have been locked up in the County jail.

Even though "Thank You Ma'm" is not to long, the short story really makes you think. There are many possibilities that can happen after the story is over. Will Roger ever see Mrs. Jones again? Will Roger change his juvenile ways? It really made me think, that's what I really enjoyed about the story. Hopefully Roger made the right decision and changed is ways. Hughes leaves it up to you how you want the story to end.
