This is an essay in which the teacher instructed the class to find four quotes that directly support certain themes from the book, and then support your reason for choosing those quates.

Quotations tend to become famous because they embody profound lessons of life in a short series of words. Since there are a remarkable amount of new lessons, the number of revered quotes multiply. Given that peoples existences take on many traits, each quote apply to different sets of people. In, There Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, a number of quotations apply to the story. Four hand picked quotes either directly relate to the story's message or contradicts the meaning; giving a perfect example of how quotes range from many aspects of life.

A good life is usually not gained by those seeking shelter behind a wall, but those who have the courage to meet what they want head on.

"To fear love is to fear life, and those who fear life are already three parts dead," preached Bertrand Russell. This quote completely supports Zora Neale Hurston's message through Janie. Throughout the book, Janie seeks love. Even before she is married, she realizes in her youth that love is the only true happiness. When she was married off by her grandmother, Janie felt no love for the man. Her courage in love led her to marry another man, whom she ran off with. That same faith in love also made her marry again after exiting yet another tormented marriage. If Janie had fear of true love, she would have strayed in the marriage of her first husband. Slowly rotting away.
