In the book One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich written by Alexander Solzhenitsyn there are many different moods that can be taken in. Even though while living in a gulag you could get a few laughs, as well as a lot of frustration and sadness. The author creates the tone and mood of the book by the use of word choice, metaphors, imagery, or actions. This book is based on a time span of one day of a man's life in a Russian gulag. A gulag being a forced labor camp where prisoners completed huge architectural projects including the White Sea-Baltic Canal, the Moscow-Volga Canal, the Baikal-Amur main railroad line, numerous hydroelectric stations, and hundreds of roads and industrial complexes in highly remote regions of Siberia and northern Russia.
The first way tone is create in the paragraph was by the actions of the guards. In this paragraph the author talks about when prisoners in the gulag would receive a parcel otherwise known as a package.

Especially, if there were homemade goods, the guards would pull the food apart and take a bite for themselves. The tone is created when the author says, "(And just you try to get high and mighty and complain, and they'll immediately say that this and that are forbidden and won't issue them to you at all.)" This quote is talking about if the prisoner were to complain about what the guards were doing to the contents of their parcel that it would be immediately taken from you and you would be left with nothing.
