"The twentieth century is the Age of Technology, which sounds about as unromantic as can be." The characteristics of the Romantic period haven't really changed over the past few centuries. We still dream about the same things as them, maybe in a more modern way, but it comes down to the same.

Everyone has an imagination, it has always been that way, and it already started when mankind was able to think. During the romantic period, people would imagine themselves being somewhere else, they would think about being in exotic countries. They would imagine that they set sail on a boat and sail of to, for example, Arabia or Spain. Nowadays people imagine that they fly off to an even further away lying country, like Australia or South America. We imagine things, because we want to be somewhere else than we are at that moment. This often happens to be the case, when we are at work, when we just lost a close friend or just because we are bored.

During the romantic period, emotions weren't suppressed anymore. The romanticists thought that emotions were good and you shouldn't hide them away, because of this the poets wrote a lot of very emotional poems. Since the poets were usually men this is a difference with the twentieth century, because men have gone back to suppressing their emotions and not liking to talk about their feelings. Men want to act "˜macho' in front of the women. Although in recent years, women rather want the men to show their feelings, which are slowly coming back a bit.
