It was primarily established to aid developing nations in their gradual integration into the world economy. It is a platform in which international economies could come together to debate and exchange ideas and thought processes concerning their interdependency and involvement with one another. It is recognized as the main component of the General Assembly of the United Nations and it deals with trade, foreign investments and development issues (UNCTAD.org).

UNCTAD can be interpreted through its three main functions.

Firstly, it is a forum for intergovernmental deliberations. Secondly, it conducts the collection and analysis of data for the debates of governmental representatives. Lastly, UNCTAD provides technical assistance to developing countries and emerging markets.

All UN member states are also members of UNCTAD which included 193 members since the year 2009. Please refer to Exhibit 1 for a full listing of member states. One must not fail to mention a series of intergovernmental and non-governmental organisms that participate as observers.

UNCTAD works with member governments of the United Nations along with organisations of the UN system at the international and regional levels. It also interacts with other governmental institutions such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), International Trade Center (ITC), the World Bank and the Agency for International Trade Information and Cooperation (AITIC) (UNCTAD.org).
