Are you a man who enjoys shopping, designer shoes and an overall fashionable well groomed look? Have you ever bought male beauty products or picked up the latest issue of GQ? Do prefer a salon over the traditional barber shop? Get with it hipsters, you may be metrosexual. What is a Metrosexual? He's fashion conscious, sensitive, and heterosexual. An urban male with a strong aesthetic sense, spending a great deal of time and money on his appearance, further illustrating his narcissistic self-image and confidence. Could it be that traditional masculinity been overtaken by trendsetting metrosexuality. An all encompassing lifestyle ideal of clothes, food, décor and music? In search of answers I investigated what it means to be a man in the 21st century and how this new evolutionary trend of metrosexuality is redefining our consumer culture.

From Daddy Day Care to Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, metrosexual presidential candidates to gay four-star generals, it seems clear that what makes a man is under serious review.

Could it be that conventional masculinity, with its stoicism and violence, has become so toxic that men themselves are refusing to take it on? In search of answers, I researched what it means to be a man in the 21st century and how this new evolutionary trend of metrosexuality is redefining our culture.

According to Michael Flocker's 2003 bestseller, The Metrosexual Guide to Style: A Handbook for the Modern Man, the trendsetting male icons of the 21st century must combine the coercive strengths of Mars and the seductive wiles of Venus. Put simply, metrosexual men are muscular but suave, confident yet image-conscious, assertive yet clearly in touch with their feminine sides. Metrosexualism is simply a guidebook for those of us who would like to be a little more popular with the ladies.
