Doesn't it feel good to know that you are appreciated and well respected? When you demonstrate certain things that you value, you will always feel good about yourself. Values are the ideas we have about what is good, what is bad, and how things should be. They are a personal inventory for what we consider most important to us in life. They may shape the character we are and may be used to find goals that we want to be accomplished. My values are ones important to everyone.

The first value that is important to me is respect. Respect can be defined as a healthy appreciation of an individual and their talents. Not only having respect for myself, but having respect for others as well is extremely important. Treating others with respect makes the world a much nicer place to live in and gives me a great reputation. Respecting someone is not a difficult task.

In fact, it is easier to respect people than it is to disrespect them. As my grandmother always told me, "treat others how you would like to be treated." It stuck with me throughout my childhood and will continue to stay with me for the rest of my life. Being a very competitive athlete, I have always had a desire to win and play my best. Occasionally there would come a time when my team would lose, and of course, I would be disappointed, but I always respected the other team for their efforts. Just the opposite, if my team would win, I showed the same amount of respect to my opposing players. After four years of high school sports, I have received a number of compliments on how great my sportsmanship is. Being respectful definitely pays off. We live in a very diverse nation...
