WEST SIDE STORY: ANITA Anita is Bernardoáïs girlfriend, leader of the Sharks. Anita is an immigrant, a worker at the Dress Shop, and Mariaáïs friend. It is at the end of the story when Bernardo, is dead and Riff leader of the Jets, is dead also, when we got to know Anita.
Anita was supposed to deliver a message to Tony at docs, from Maria, that she was being held up, but will be there later. So when Anita got there, there were a lot of Jets, and they wouldnáït let her go to the basement to deliver her message, because she is a Shark, and Sharks and Jest donáït exactly click together.

She probably would have been raped, if doc hadnáït come and stop the Jets. So she lied and instead of saying that Maria would meet Tony later, she said that when Chino, the person Maria was supposed to be married found out about them, shot Maria. The lie that Anita told angered Tony and made him an easy target for the Sharks, when he stepped outside looking for Chino, and ended up being shot in the back by him. Is Anita to blame? I donáït think that Anita is a mean girl because she lied, since she had a reason to do what she did, and if it was me, I would probably would have done the same thing, thinking of revenge, trying to get back at the Jets especially Tony.
