William Wentworth was born in the year 1793. It is unknown as to whether he was born on Norfolk Island, in Sydney, or in a ship bound from Sydney to Norfolk Island. His parents D'Arcy Wentworth and Catherine Crowley were being transported from Britain. His father D'Arcy Wentworth was a surgeon, who was not a convict, but was however accused of highway robbery and accepted transportation in order to avoid conviction. His mother however, was a convict. In 1796, Wentworth went with his parents to Sydney. The family lived at Parramatta, where his father became a successful landowner. ... in Australia played a large part in his life. He passionately felt that trial by jury, a free press, and the right of colonies to govern themselves were things worth living for and fighting for. Wentworth also led movements opposed to the end of transportation, opposed to the dismemberment of the vast colony of New South Wales into three smaller colonies, now known as New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland. Wentworth is respected for giving lower class people the chance to vote and put forward their views. Certainly his political ambitions were paramount in his life, but he also devoted much of his time and energy to the cause of education in New South Wales.
