Culture and society of the present day is best revealed through the reading of books. There are so many types of books that are available to everyone no matter their race, income or religion. The only way that books may not reach someone is if they are illiterate but there are books on tape that are also available. Some types of books are self-help, religious, biographical, autobiographical, non-fiction and fiction. One of the best examples of a single book that represents the culture and society of the day is Skipping Christmas by John Grisham.

This particular book exposes society's need to follow the norms and to conform to the popular rituals. In Skipping Christmas the main characters, Mr. And Mrs. Krank, decide to "skip" Christmas and go on a cruse instead. By doing this they were not going to buy any gifts, decorate in anyway and they were not going to give money to charities for festive reasons.

While doing this they were bombarded by questioning looks, angry neighbors and friends who did not understand why any one would give up the holiday spirit and tradition. The Krank's thought that by not celebrating Christmas in the normal why they would save money and they would be able to enjoy their Christmas more. As it got closer and closer to Christmas they were hounded by friends and neighbors as to why they were acting so crazy. The neighborhood in which the Krank's lived had traditions of putting giant snowmen on their rooftops and decorating each house with hundreds of lights. Even though the Krank's explained why they had decided to vary from the rituals and traditions of Christmas they had their home picketed and on the local news as to the people who were not celebrating Christmas.
