Kinda reminds you of a textbook summary. I would suggest having some documentation of the sources used.

"GI Joe and Barbie have succeeded in lowering the self esteem of boys and girls in our country." is not a terrible statement, but I would like to see more development of the self esteem issue. There are many factors that affect a child's self esteem. Maybe just a statement of growing up and having unattainable goals such as being perfect like Barbie or GI Joe would have been more effective. I do like the opening sentences because it grabs the attention of the reader...or at least it did me.
