Macbeth's primary downfall was seeking advice from familiar spirits -- devils. The role of these witches was to offer worldly treasures (Thane of Cawdor) for the soul of a man. Macbeth should have sought the praise of God rather than the honor of man. True greatness is found in seeking advice from God not devils. Indeed, God may choose to send the advice through human vessels but never via devils. If Macbeth had diligently sought true dignity, he would have realized that a virtuous character is more valuable than temporary kingship. Worldly treasures can never satisfy the thirst of the soul.
