Is Big Brother Watching Us

"War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength." (Orwell, 104) It has been lead to believe that George Orwell wrote 1984 as a warning about corrupt governments and what could happen if they take complete control. I believe that some aspects of 1984 have become true, for example: Communist governments covering their actions, the use of drones, and governments looking through peoples' phone calls/ emails.

Everyone should know the infamous picture of the lone man standing in front, blocking, four military tanks. It is known as the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, when peaceful protesters were slaughtered by the Communist Party of China. After the incident occurred the government tried to cover it up by saying "no one died" (William Lunz), much like how Winston falsified history in 1984. The government also assumingly forced witnesses Xiao Bin and Comrade Chou to confess the "lies" they told about the incident.

Ultimately they changed their story and no one spoke of what happened, but in the back of their minds they knew the truth.

Once everybody thought that their conversations via email or phone call were safe and no one gain access to them. However with the NSA loophole the US government can see every email you have ever sent. They don't need your permission either; they can conduct "warrantless searches for the phone calls or emails of law abiding Americans" (Ball, Ackerman). This act is an invasion of privacy and is wrong. With this happening it it's like we have our own version of "Big Brother" watching us. With them looking at our emails through their computers is like they are watching us through telescreens.
