INTRODUCTION

Well before the colonization (process through which a country teaches its own culture to another country), different families of West African societies had their religion focused on the adoration of sacred things (lagunas, sea, chairs…etc.) and they believed in spirits. Their way of thinking, acting and dressing were also done by only referring to their own cultures. But when these families will be colonized, there will have a change in their societies due to the fact that they will be strongly influenced by the colonization. Thus, our study of today will be articulated on « Religion and Social change in West Africa ».

I-EVOLUTION OF RELIGION IN WEST AFRICA

The concept of traditional African religions is a representation of all non-related to the Old Testament practiced religions in sub-Saharan Africa. Like all companies, African societies have religious practices that have evolved since their inception and mingle with the movements of population. in West Africa, there are different religions and myths that vary by region. Especially:

Akan religion (Ghana)

Dahomey ( Fon ) mythology (Benin)

Efik mythology (Nigeria, Cameroon)

Odinani of the Igbo people (Nigeria, Cameroon)

Serer religion (Senegal, Gambia)

Yoruba religion (Nigeria, Benin)

West African Vod un (Ewe, Ghana, Benin, Nigeria)

But, over the years the Europeans have brought their own culture and religion to the area as the colonized Africa. Again there are big differences in the way that this was done although at least in this case the religions were fairly similar. One...
