"Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant" (Horace). This quote is saying that adversity changes someone's characteristics, and processing decisions in their life. Adversity can be as small as getting in trouble as a child, or as tragic of experiencing death of someone you're close to. When you go through these circumstances adversity comes in through your actions corresponding to what happened. Although in some cases adversity makes situations worse and not yet waken them.

All through elementary school and some of middle school I was bullied because of my looks and for the fact that I wasn't as "feminine" as the others. I gradually became more and more depressed as time went on. Though those events I had the talent to pull myself through it, and learn from it. For the fact that I was bullied it makes me second think things I say to people and how I treat them.

When working with my peers at school I give them the same respect that I would like to endure.

Adversity isn't just being emotionally wrecked. It can be failing financially or a political hardship. My dad worked at Cesena for 10 years. After seven years he had bought a house and everything was going as planned. Almost going on his 11th year he was given the news that he would be getting laid off in 3 months. He became emotionally and financial unstable. This changed his characteristics about the way he spends money now, and being prepared for what can happen in the future.
