Alexander Nevsky The Movie Director: Sergei Eisenstein Composer: Sergei Prokofiev Alexander Nevsky is a 1938 cinematic masterpiece directed by Sergio Eisenstein, which compellingly does a superb job trivializing the 13th century war hero Nevsky for his exultation of communism and call to arms against the Teutonic Knights during medieval Russia. The time is 1242 and the Russian people are under the reigns of the Mongols when they learn of an attack by the German Teutonic Knights is eminent. War hero Alexander Nevsky, played by one of Russia's finest actors of that time, Nikolai Cherkassov is asked by the Russians to lead them against the enemy, The Teutonic Knights.

The famous "Battle on the ice scene" and men, women and small children being executed are chilling and graphic reminders of the intensity of the devastation that took place on that frigid ice on Lake Peipus. The Russians would ultimately lead the Germans Knights to their death into those freezing waters on an April afternoon after being coaxed to the thin ice and then the Russians would ambush the Germans.

The calculated strategy by the Russians knew that the weight of the Germans armor was too heavy for the ice. This was a scene that gave the audience a feeling of revenge against the Germans for the atrocities that they had caused slaughtering Russians. These killings by the Knights were against men, women and children. On a lighter note, the film offers a subplot featuring a love triangle with the serious Gavrilo (Andrei Abrikosov) and light hearted Vasili (Nikolai Okholopkov) both vying to court the young Olga (Vera Ivasheva). The tri decide that the winner will be the man who shows the most bravery during the battle. These characters brought a human side to the film. No voice, only subtitles, and music,
