Testosterone was isolated in 1932. During World War 2, soldiers of Nazi Germany were apart of experiments that tested anabolic steroids. As time progressed, the use of anabolic steroids increased among athletes to enhance their performance. There are several derivatives of anabolic steroids. There are also some adverse side-effects of using anabolic steroids.

Anabolic steroids are best described as synthetic derivatives of testosterone. Anabolic steroids are used to enhance muscle growth and advance protein synthesis. As stated earlier there are several derivatives (Kam 686). They can be split into two groups. The first group under commonly known anabolic steroids is 17 a-alkyl derivatives (Kam 685). The second group is 17 b-ester derivatives.

The first group has eight common alkyl derivatives (Kam 685). They are placed in this group because they are oral agents. The most familiar derivatives are: oxydrolone, Methytestosterone, methandrostenolone, metholone, and stanozolo.

Methandrostenolone is one of the most effective drugs of steroid group expressing anabolic activity (M-W, 2006). Methyltestosterone is a synthetic androgen administered orally for the treatment of male testosterone deficiency (M-W, 2006). Oxydrolone is another androgenic steroid that is given to help weight gain and to relieve bone pain in osteoporosis. Stanozolol is another man made steroid that is used to decrease heart attack, face swelling, extremities, bowel wall and throat systems that occur through hereditary angiodema (M-W, 2006). Danazol is a steroid used for the treatment of endometriosis and fibrocystic breast disease (M-W, 2006).

Lastly is the last oral steroid, fluoxymesterone. It is used for palliative treatment of breast cancer in women and testosterone deficiency among men (M-W 2006). When these steroids are used properly, they can treat many ailments. Steroids appear to be very helpful to those in need. The adverse effects will be...
