There are many misconceptions about gay and lesbian people. From a purely scientific view, homosexuality is very natural. All animals, including humans, can respond to homosexual stimuli. There is evidence of homosexuality occurring throughout history. One anthropological study showed that 64% of non-western cultures considered homosexuality to be socially acceptable.

No one knows the truth about what causes different sexual orientations. There are many theories that propose homosexuality is caused by something such as hormonal imbalance, social conditioning, family dynamics, or bad experiences with the opposite sex. When we ask what causes homosexuality, implicit in the question is the idea that there is something wrong with homosexuality and if we could find out what causes it, we could cure it. In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association determined that homosexuality is a way of life and not a mental or emotional illness. The association also takes the stand that it would be unethical to try to change the sexual orientation of a homosexual person.

Many homosexual people know that they are attracted to members of their own sex at a very early age, sometimes as young as 6 or 7. Others learn much later in life. Some research indicates that sexual orientation is determined between birth and age 3. This information suggests that homosexuality is a way of life and is possibly genetic.

Many people accuse lesbian, gay and bisexual people of flaunting their sexuality when they talk about their partner, hold their partner's hand in public, or kiss each other. These are activities that heterosexual people do all the time. Due to homophobic reactions, many homosexuals are forced to hide their sexuality in public.
