The main objective of financial statements is to provide useful information to external decision makers. The balance sheet together with the income statement and cash flow statement, make up the cornerstone of any company's financial statements. A balance sheet provides a snapshot of the company's assets, liabilities and stockholder's equity while an Income statement is a report that shows how much revenue a company earned over a specific time period. It also shows the revenues and expenses incurred and bottom line provides the net income of the company. In this paper we will look at the balance sheet and income statements of four companies belonging to different industries.

Con-Way, Inc. (Trucking & Transportation Industry)

Con-way Inc., together with its subsidiaries, provides transportation, logistics, and supply chain management services for a range of manufacturing, industrial, and retail customers.

It operates in five segments: Freight, Logistics, Truckload, Vector, and Other. Con-Way was founded in 1929 and is based in San Mateo, California (Yahoo Finance, 2009).
