In the story "A Handful of Dates," Salih relates through the eyes of a young boy his experiences in a critical moment that marks his passage from childhood to adulthood. In this moment he lived a dilemma between his beliefs and feelings. He disapproves the behavior of his grandfather toward his neighbors and he feels esteem for man named Masood. This is the moment in which the author's life is changed suddenly. The mosque, the river and the field were the landmark of salih's life. He learns that the real life of ligion.

First, The Koran taught to love people and life. Salih loves to recite "the chapter of the merciful" (78) in which he learns that everybody in the world has good feelings. Also, He learns from the Koran that the behavior of people is directed for their religion. According to his beliefs evil does not exist in the world.

Soon, life prepares him an experience which changed his beliefs.

His grandfather was a respectable person in the community where they lived. The boy felt great admiration him and He wants to be like him. Every morning, he used to study the Koran in the mosque.
