As the government and citizens of California know, the population is growing rapidly. Most of the population are Spanish speaking people. In schools, the ongoing controversy of bilingual education is beginning to strike the curiosities of administrators and parents as well. Some people believe schools should not provide bilingual classes and force Spanish speaking students into an environment of the English language only. I, on the other hand, believe bilingual education can be very effective if the Spanish-only speaking students and English-only speaking students are separated into different classes. I believe this would be effective because it would be easier for the Spanish speaking students to learn English and understand what they are learning academically, the English speaking students would not be slowed down, and it would open up a lot more job opportunities for the students as well.

First of all, if the Spanish-only speaking students were put into classes together with a bilingual teacher, they would be able to learn English at the pace they need and it would help them understand what they are learning academically.

If students are thrown into an environment where they are extremely diverse and don’t understand what they are doing, they will be more afraid to go to school and unwilling to learn. If they are put into a class where they understand and there are other students around who can communicate with them, they will feel way more comfortable and will learn more effectively. I have a friend named Eliana who, in elementary school, did not know any English. She was put into a bilingual class with other students learning English and got the highest test scores and learned a lot. Now she is in high school, knows perfect English, and still speaks in Spanish when she has to.
