Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany. Her father was Otto Frank and her mother was Edith Frank. Anne had a sister named Margot; and also lived with her grandmother. Anne Frank is famous because she wrote in her diary during the Holocaust. Her diary was later published. The Holocaust was when Nazis (German soldiers) tried to take over Europe. The Nazis decided that the German people were a super-race and would murder anyone that they thought was inferior. These included gypsies, blacks, homosexuals, handicapped people and Jews. Over six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis. The Frank family was Jewish. In the fall of 1933, Otto Frank received an offer to start a new company in Amsterdam selling a powdered fruit extract for making jams. At this time, Germany was in bad shape. They had their highest unemployment and most homelessness. The German people were disgusted with the government and needed some help.

Adolf Hitler made wild speeches and blamed the Jews for all of the countries problems. In 1933, Hitler and his Nazi party were in power and Hitler became the leader of the government. He took control of all of German daily life. Anyone who was against him was beaten or put in prison. In February of 1934, Anne and her family moved to Amsterdam in The Netherlands. From the time that Hitler took over in 1933, he began taking over countries and by 1940 The Netherlands surrendered to the Nazis. On June 12, 1942 Anne was given a diary for her 13th birthday. On July 5, 1942 Margot Frank received a notice that she was being deported to the Westerbork concentration camp. On July 6, 1942 the Frank family went into hiding from the Nazis.
