Biography-Wayne Gretzky

As we all know, Wayne Gretzky has been one of the most influential and well known hockey players of all time. He has battled his way thru the rankings of hockey to achieve many of his goals such as playing in the Olympics. His achievements were no easy task, for they have led him on a journey of twists and turns and ups and downs. Wayne has managed to beat the odds and succeed in a very successful career.

Born January 26th, 1961 in Brantford, Ontario; Gretzky was no ordinary kid. He began skating when he was about three years old. His father, Walter- a former amateur hockey player, dedicated himself to raise Wayne with . Flooding the backyard and stringing lights so the young Gretzky could skate at night showed his dedication to his goals. At the age of six, Wayne began playing on the Brantford Novice All-Star team, out playing most of the players in the bantam division.

He worked his way thru his teenage years and later arrived in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to play for the Greyhounds. His first and only year of playing Junior Hockey. The following year at the age of eighteen signed a contract on June 1978 with the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association. Just eight games later, Gretzky was sold to the rival Edmonton Oilers along with some of his former teammates. Finally realizing one of his life long goals, by centering on a line with his childhood idol, Gordie Howe. By the end of that season, Wayne accumulated a total of 110 points and was selected as the WHA's Rookie of the year.
