I. Breakfast of Champions II. Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

III. First copyright date: 1974 A. Delacorte Press/ Seymour Lawrence IV. Settings: A. Years: 1973 B. Places: Sacred Miracle Cave, Midland City V. Theme: Fate and the Creator of the Universe could quite possibly be real.

VI. Characters: Kilgore Trout- Kilgore is a writer that I think is going around the country for more ideas about things to put in his novels. He already has some strange plots. He seems to not care what anyone thinks and that he is just a game piece in the fateful universe.

Dwayne Hoover- Poor Dwayne seems to not have a strong grip of his marbles. His home town of Midland City is where his car dealership is that is actually pretty successful. He had one wife who drank Drano and killed herself. He is now fooling around with Francine Pefko.

Francine Pefko- Francine is Dwayne Hoover's significant other.

The reason they're not a couple is because they both had bad marriages that, I think, scarred them. Francine runs the "nerve center" in Dwayne's car dealership.

Kurt Vonnegut- He doesn't actually reveal his name in the book but he talks in a first person view. He is the Creator of the Universe and he knows everything about everyone. Kurt also has the power to guide people into doing things. He's also a little insane, too.

VII. Summary: This, honest to god was one of the strangest books I have ever read. The plot sometimes doesn't follow the normal coarse like other books.

It all starts out where Kilgore Trout and Dwayne Hoover didn't even know each other. It is basically about how fate can bring the oddest of people together for some purpose that the Creator of the Universe had made up. Kilgore was at a writer's block supposedly and he needed inspiration. So he was on a kind of road trip looking for ideas. While out there he met a truck driver who he was with for a while but he never remembered his name. The driver dropped him off at Midland city.

Midland City is where the home of Dwayne Hoover and his small car dealership is. His relatives were owners of the slightly profitable Sacred Miracle Cave which was about 75 miles from Midland City. They are having a problem with some chemicals in the water there so their business is going downhill. It is actually an Air Force that makes plastic shards to put in bombs instead of metal shards because it is cheaper. It ruined their business.

Dwayne finally starts to break down and finishes his journey to become insane. (which is all part of the Creator of the Universe's plan) He tells off his significant other saying, "Let's keep lovemaking and presents separate O.K." (Vonnegut 163) and then he gets in a fight with about eleven people in a restaurant. He is with Kilgore Trout by this time. Kilgore asks him to read his novel. The Creator of the Universe grants him the power to speed read. This enables Dwayne to read it in a matter of a few minutes rather than weeks.

The y figured out that the entire human race was a bunch of robots. ( not literally) But from the mental kind of way. Dwayne made Kilgore realize this. Then the Creator of the Universe came over to them and explained everything. He said that some "machines" are programmed to hate or love, to make money or to find a mate. They all do not have the ability to do their own thing. They are programmed to do as they supposed to do. The Creator of the Universe said," You are the only creature in the entire Universe that has free will." (Vonnegut 259) He was to decide what to do next for the rest of humanity.
