Buck howls because he is trying to answer the call of the wild. Buck was a husky but lived like a king. Once Buck was taken away from that he starting "hearing" the call of the wild. In the end Buck realized that it was his destiny to heed the call of the wild. But in order to do this he must break from the bonds of beds.

Buck grew up living the easy life. He was the son of a dog who was the favorite of his master's. The master was a very rich man named Judge Miller. The Judge's property was very large and very expensive. On page two of the book it says, "And over this great demesne Buck ruled." Unfortunately he would be taken from his home, perhaps it was destiny.

On his adventures Buck often heard the call of the wild. He was constantly surrounded by the savagest of dogs surviving in the savagest of societies.

"Sometimes as he crouched there, blinking dreamily at the flames, it seemed that the flames were of another fire, and that as he crouched by this other fire he saw another and different man...he uttered strange sounds..." It goes on to describe almost the ideal caveman who is also known as the most savage of humans. It is the call of the wild that is giving him these visions. Before that Buck was so focused on chasing a rabbit, leading the pack, he actually yelped. That is a also a sign that he was answering the call of the wild. Buck would soon learn that he could not escape the call of the wild.
