There are many careers in the field of accounting. I have chosen to discuss working as a partner in an accounting firm. Today's news reports have been filled with the stories of Enron, a major company that went bankrupt. Many people are blaming the accountants from a major accounting firm for the downfall of this business. It seems as though it was made to look like the business was doing well when in truth it was not. I believe that honesty and integrity are a must in your personal characteristics to be a good accountant.

Accountants help ensure that a firm runs efficiently, it's records are accurate, and that it's taxes are paid in the right amount and on time. They also provide services such as: budget analysis, financial and investment planning, and limited legal services. One of their most fundamental tasks however, is the preparation, analyzing, and verifying of the financial documents to provide their clients with the information they need to keep their business running profitably.

The history of Accounting is very interesting. Records have been found in Babylonia that date back to 3600 B.C. Double-entry bookkeeping, which we now use today, was developed in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Luca Pacioli, an Italian mathematician, is credited for developing this system in 1494. After the Industrial Revolution, the need for accounting methods grew. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, more accurate information was needed to make decisions on how to make your business prosper financially.
