Tom Cruise, Tiger Woods, Kris Aquino, Manny Pacquiao. Who doesn't know them? Everybody knows them. Everybody is talking about them - what they do, what they wear, what they eat, what they like - everything about them. They are what we call celebrities. A celebrity is a widely-recognized or famous person who commands a high degree of public and media attention. Aside from that, one fascinating fact about them is that celebrities, in some ways, are similar to puppets.

First similarity is that celebrities are also created, just like puppets created by puppet-makers. But for celebrities, it is the television that creates them. It is quite easy to make a celebrity with the help of television. One thing that a celebrity needs is to be famous and people have this notion that one is famous if one is on television. Television offers a lot of chance to ordinary people to become celebrities.

There are different sorts of talent shows and reality shows which give common people a chance to be stars. Participants of these shows are trained to improve in their craft and they instantly become celebrities. American Idol, for example, has been constantly producing celebrities for five years; Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken and Taylor Hicks, just to name a few. On the other hand, some celebrities do not go through the talent and reality show process. They are discovered by talent scouts or agents, people who look for potential artists or athletes and help them in their way to stardom. Artists have their breakthroughs in music or movies and athletes have their best games. Through this process, they still end up being on television. Appearing on television and having an extraordinary ability at the same time, catches the attention of the public and makes them famous.
