Do you suffer from diarrhea, anemia, or unexplained weight loss? When consulting a doctor about these symptoms it may be diagnosed as a digestive disease such as Crohns Disease or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. This specific diagnosis would be incorrect because the patient is actually suffering from celiac disease. Celiac disease is a rare disease which makes a proper diagnosis most important.

Celiac disease or otherwise known as celiac sprue is a disease that destroys the inner lining of your small intestine. Celiac disease is a disease that the villi (small finger like parts that help absorb food) in the small intestine are flattened if a patient with the disease consumes a product containing gluten. Gluten is a protein found in products such as wheat, rye, and barley. "Although gluten is mainly found in foods it is also found in products we use every day such as stamp and envelope adhesives, medicines, and vitamins (Celiac disease Advanced)." Experts have come to realize that celiac disease has been around for quite some time, from the little research that has been completed on it. "Experts speculate that celiac disease has been around since humans switched from a diet consisting of meat, fruit, and nuts to a cultivated diet including grains, like wheat (Bamesberger)." Most people were able to get use to this new way of eating but some were unable to and that is where celiac disease first appeared in our society. Sometimes people suffer from the symptoms of celiac disease for years before ever being properly diagnosed; now there are many people who have celiac disease and are never properly diagnosed.
