The meaning of a story can entertain; teach a lesson, or raise questions, as shown in the following sources of literature. In the movie "the children of men" the author, Alfonso Cuaron, brings out the meaning loss of innocence and hope through the tragic circumstance of infertility. This shows viewer the cruelty and horror mankind can bring to the society to protect ones own territory. Sophocles like Alfonso uses tragic circumstances to bring out the meaning in his story. The meaning of human values is shown in this play. King Kreon of Thebes goes against an unwritten law, a cultural value, to maintain his own pride, breaking all human values. Along with the movie and the play, a character, the Joker, gives meaning to the law of nature in a monologue from the dark knight. This monologue in particular from the dark knight allows the reader to see that although the joker is an evil villain, what he says about the society is true.

In all of these forms of literature the author's mainly have the same concept of meaning, talking about society as a whole being flawed. Through the use of literary techniques and devices such as metaphor, symbolism, and characterization, the above points will be discussed in more detail, by examining the particular techniques used by the author.

In the film "Children of men", we see the implication of hope and innocence with the use of metaphor and mood. " I can't really remember when I last had any hope, and I certainly can't remember when anyone else did either. Because really, since women stopped being able to have babies, what's left to hope for?" (Theodore Faron) Infertility brings an end to the world, as seen in the movie, leaving everyone affected by overpopulation and lack of resources.
