Character Analysis: The Picture of Dorian Gray

Dorian Gray ---- A young man that comes from a broken family, and a life of pain. He and Basil Hallward had met at a party and instantly become friends. Dorian visits Basil everyday, until he meets Basil's friend Lord Henry. Dorian is fascinated with what Lord Henry tells him. Basil had painted a beautiful picture of Dorian. Mr. Gray had mixed emotions about the painting, all because of what Lord Henry had said to him earlier. Lord Henry told him that his youth was going to fade and he was going to become wrinkly and ugly. Dorian was almost jealous of the painting, because while he gets ugly and old the painting will remain beautiful and youthful. He started bad mouthing the painting and almost wanted to destroy it. But, later on he wanted to keep it, for its beauty, though Lord Henry wanted it. Dorian and Lord Henry go to the garden to have a talk, Basil doesn't like Lord Henry talking to Dorian.

Basil knows that Lord Henry will put crazy ideas into Dorian's head. When they were in the garden Lord Henry praised Dorian's beauty and youth, but warned him that it would all fade eventually. That's when Dorian became aware of his beauty and was sort of scared of the years to come. For he was going to become an ugly old man. I believe that Dorian is a bit of a nut, and is very impressionable. Dorian has many mood swings. For example, he was debating with himself for a quite a long time in chapter two. Determining if he liked the painting or not and whether he should keep it. Also he had taken almost everything that Lord Henry said and digested it.
